Day 1: Betwixtmas

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Here I come, sneaking back into your inbox with the first #gardeninspo365 blog post since new year’s eve 2019, as if 2020 never really happened. You can fill in the blanks, I’m sure. And, even though at the beginning of 2021 the notion of a daily post is very much more in the neighbourhood of aspiration than commitment, I hope you’ll be as glad in the receipt as I am in the sending and, if not, your pardon for the intrusion – as ever, you can unsubscribe at the foot of the email.

Of course if you’re just happening across this blog post in your browser, you’re very welcome. You can sign up here to get more of the same emailed to you regularly.

If you’re still here, a hearty welcome, and a Happy New Year. Betwixtmas is technically behind us – though something of that delicious lull continues beyond the first weekend in January, perhaps even lapping upon the shores of twelfth night. Undoubtedly one of my favourite times of the year; a kind of listless, freewheeling quality to the days making them feel at once timeless and too-quickly over. I’ve plunged eagerly and early into the garden each morning from Boxing Day on, clearing space in the beds so I could get to the soil for the purposes of planting the remaining tulip bulbs, feeling rather like a squirrel burying nuts and, like those furry critters, I shall doubtless forget where I’ve sunk my treasure until it sends up a flag in spring.

I think this activity may mean I finished the tulip planting before new year – I’m sure I’ve been at it well into January before now. A prickle on the back of my neck warns me that smugness makes an unreliable companion for the gardener – pride before a fall – but I’m ignoring it for now, and basking a little in its glow.
