Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
A morning of heavy rain and flooded roads, the icy January wind probing insistently, intent upon exploiting any gap between scarf, hat and coat. Coming and going, low clouds shroud the North Downs and offer teasing glimpses of distant snow-covered slopes, while my numbing fingers fumble the twine again in the process of binding one bent rose stem to another. If the forecast can be believed, this should be the last of the wet stuff for a while – and by mid morning the sun appears, though it feels no warmer. Wedged in between shrubs in a cold and damp flowerbed, I think of pelargoniums crammed together for company on a shelf in my study, sheltering, protected, jostling with one another for the light and weeks away from the freedom and release of the outdoors. But I have been under glass for too long over Christmas, and the privilege of working outdoors in the garden all day is not lost on me.
