Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
The freeze is well and truly here, and the daily observances include making sure there’s accessible water in the birdbaths for the feathered contingent of the garden. Somehow we’ve managed 15 years in this garden without putting in a pond of any kind – something we really need to address this year – and so there are no fish to worry about, and no layer of ice to remind myself not to break for fear of sending harmful shockwaves through the water (such well-intentioned shenanigans being decidedly unpleasant and even injurious for aquatic life, besides which fish can cope surprisingly well below the frozen surface).
The most likely casualty of the frozen conditions will be the plastic spray attachment for the hose, which I never remember to disconnect before the mercury takes a plunge. If I’ve left water in there it will freeze and push the casing apart and I’ll get a jet of icy water in my eye or down my trouser leg the next time I turn the outdoor tap on, which annual penance you’d think would be sufficient to drive the lesson home. It hasn’t yet.
