Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Be careful what you wish for, they said, and, suddenly, the snow has arrived and it’s more Christmassy than Christmas. At least it is here on the patio table, where a recently acquired dwarf pine seems to be carrying off the winter look with rakish equanimity. In truth, we’ve barely graduated beyond a light dusting here, though it’s dawned on me that every garden I work in will be covered more generously. But back to Pinus mugo – years away from attaining the size of the great lolloping thing in the middle of the Long Border at Great Dixter, though of course I’ve been wishing for one of my own ever since my first visit to that garden. When the snow’s gone, and the ground has thawed out a bit, I might even get around to planting it.
