Day 56: false spring

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A run of dry weather, a glimpse of the sun two days running, and everyone’s talking about a false spring. Irrespective of winter being over at the end of the week – by the meteorological measure at least – I think this says more about our collectively fragile state of mind just now than it does about the handover from one season to the next. Quite understandably, there’s a general wariness about getting our hopes up, only to have them dashed. Walking through the nuttery this afternoon, I noticed no snowdrops beneath the trees, but an abundance of pale yellow primroses and so, false spring or not, if the garden’s trying to tell me that it’s time to move on, that’s a message I’m ready to hear.
