Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I mentioned a few days back that, contrary to my better judgement, we would soon be welcoming another maidenhair fern into our home. She’s arrived, and... is it my imagination, or is there something of a challenge in the way she’s holding her beautiful green-lace foliage; a kind of ‘let’s see what you’ve got, then’ vibe going on? You couldn’t blame her – I’ve managed to murder at least three of her predecessors. The key to keeping Adiantum raddianum indoors is, unquestionably, to keep the soil constantly wet and to provide an appropriate level of humidity (eschewing a pebble tray, it’s going to have to be misting), but also to provide sufficient bright (but not direct) light so the darn thing will be too busy growing to pause and think about carking it. This is my plan. I am ordering new shelves for a spot on my study wall, which will arrive in a fortnight. If she’s still flourishing by the time I’ve put them up, I might allow myself a small, satisfied smile. But let me not get ahead of myself.
