Day 68: paeony promises

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The paeonies have moved into stage two of their above-ground existence; fat, sharply pointed buds transformed in the space of a few days into bloody hands clasped in prayer, tiny trees exquisitely carved from blocks of red sandalwood. I’m not sure that there’s a more exciting plant to watch in the garden at this time of year, every day seems to bring something different, building towards fat flower buds and those glorious, short-lived blooms. And the memory of fulsome and fleeting beauty that lingers long after the flowers have gone over.
