Day 78: dahlias, and humble beginnings

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Lurking at the back of the shed or in a darkened corner of the garage, boxes with perhaps the most unpromising looking contents you could hope to imagine. Lumpy bits, stringy bits, and everything covered in dried mud. The contrast between this ugly bunch of tubers and the vivid flowers they’ll produce in a few months time could scarcely be more marked, and I wonder if therein lies some of the delight in dahlia growing – of course we can all rave about their glamorous show in high summer and, really, that would be enough. But knowing how they started out in March, before we brushed them off, potted them up with fresh compost and gave them weeks of TLC? Perhaps there’s hope for us all.
