Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Just-in-time might be an industrial concept of more historical interest than contemporary relevance thanks to Brexit but, as a strategy, it’s alive and well in our garden. And so, not two months after having carried out the identical procedure on the hellebores, I find myself crawling about and peering into the heart of the epimediums, snipping out the old foliage in order to reveal the blooms and trying my darnedest not to snag any of the flowering stems. Epimedium x versicolor 'sulphureum' will get lovely, foxy patches on its mid green leaves of you give it enough light. Sadly here, where we take full advantage of its ability to grow well in dry shade, it doesn’t get sufficient sunlight to colour up. You win some, you lose some. We get wonderful flowers on wiry stems, good foliage all year round, and a reminder to snigger at its common name every time we pass.
