Day 108: frozen sambuca

It’s disappointing to discover that, of all the ingredients essential to for a liqueur to be sold as Sambuca, the extract of elderflower (from the species Sambucus) is merely an optional inclusion. Something not quite right there. I’m sure my black-leaved elder Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Eva’  would have been glad for a slug of something medicinal these past few chilly nights – ordinarily easily one of the most enthusiastic growers in the garden, I don’t recall ever before having seen its foliage curled over and encrusted with frost, and certainly not for several days running. I’ve not the slightest doubt that Eva will simply shiver, shrug, and shake it off, but I could stand a little less ice with my sambucus.
