Day 129: dog violet

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’m not sure you’re supposed to laugh at your flowers. But in all honesty, I’ve seen the violets look better. A genus (Viola spp.) with such character in whose petals we habitually see faces – the from cheery countenance of pansies to the laughter lines of the dog violet (Viola riviniana) – this year the ones in my garden look like a pitbull chewing on a wasp, and more dog-eared than I’ve come to expect. They are part of the background vegetation – those things I didn’t plant that can get a little out of hand but, if I’m honest, have more of a right to be here than anything else I bring in from nursery or garden centre. They might look a little funny this year, but they’re still due some respect.
