Day 136: Veronica Speedwell

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’ve always thought the name Veronica Speedwell sounds like a character straight out of a sixties spy novel – preferably one where identities and aliases are less than clearly defined. My Collins Wild Flower Guide describes the speedwells (Veronica spp.) as a “large genus of annuals and perennials that can present identification problems”, and it ain’t lyin’. That said, I’m pretty sure that today’s plume of flower buds above the one open blossom belongs to Germander speedwell (Veronica chamaedrys), and not the common field speedwell (V. persica) whose sprawling stems and solitary pale blue flowers I’m more used to finding in the flowerbeds.
