Just a few feet away from the salvia we’d thought lost (see Day 143), a culinary relative is spilling over the edges of one of the raised beds. Of course the purple sage (Salvia officinalis ‘Purpurescens’) is a staple herb for the kitchen, but I’d grow it just for its ornamental value, a single plant managing to encompass my fondness for purple leaves and glaucous leaves and blue-green leaves and tactile textures. There are spires of violet flowers too, though they’re very much not the main event. Unless you’re a bee, when they’re the tops.
