Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Circumstances have dictated that I’ve spent quite a lot of time lately driving through Cotswold countryside, rather than pottering in the garden. I’m not a huge fan of big fields, but the moment I hit a town or village, streets invariably flanked by buildings in that famous yellow-grey limestone, I find myself peering out through the windscreen at the plants that like to set up home at the base of walls or the cracks between blocks. This week, red valerian has been catching my eye. Its botanical name is Centranthus ruber though, more delightfully, it’s also known as kiss-me-quick. Try asking for that in a garden centre, and you might not get quite what you bargained for.
