Day 172: midsummer greys

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

I’m hoping for a renegade sunbeam to break the clouds today and spotlight the blossom on the mock orange (Philadelphus coronaria), but the forecast looks decidedly dreary, and I fear we’re set for the greyest midsummer’s day I can recall. The longest day of the year, kept secret by the clouds. But if I can stand in the shelter of the shrub and catch the scent of the blossom on the air, it will be worth braving the gloom and the wet, though I may need a ladder to get a proper whiff. Mock oranges can get large, and this one is overdue a good prune – a drastic haircut scheduled for a fortnight’s time.
