Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Here’s the confusing thing about rodgersia: I can never decide whether I’m growing it for the foliage, or the flowers. It’s not the thorniest of issues, since both are impressive – you begin the season by admiring the handsome, lobed leaves, tinged bronze when young then turning progressively more green and, just when you’re congratulating yourself for creating such an exotic, almost prehistoric vibe with your discerning planting choice, the flowers come along. Great pink (in the case of Rodgersia pinnata ‘Superba’, sometimes cream with other varieties) panicles, feather dusters held aloft, which alter the mood slightly, but with no less panache. As confusions go, it’s one I’m happy to let go unresolved.
