Day 205: height and volume

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Height and volume. It’s what everyone wants in a newly planted garden, not only for privacy, but somehow to invoke a feeling of longevity – no one really wants to feel as if they’re in a newly planted garden. And while you decide to spend out on mature plants for the height, it usually takes a season or so before they bulk out. Here, I’m planting a wafty veil between the garden and the meadow beyond, comprising mainly Stipa gigantea and Verbena bonariensis – the height’s almost there, the volume will come next year. But considering the stipa was only divided a matter of weeks ago and the verbena was potted on in spring from seedlings sow in a single 9cm pot, we’re not doing too badly.
