Day 211: globe artichoke

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A peachy violet fuzz has appeared overnight on the globe artichokes (Cynara scolymus), letting me know that I’ve missed harvesting them for another year. It’s no great shame since for me an artichoke on my plate falls squarely into the category of too much work for too little reward – you are, of course, free to disagree. But would I be without their very tangible presence in the garden? I would not – the place would feel somehow empty without them watching over me. And now, with their Fido Dido flat-tops emerging in all their electric glory, I can’t bear to think I might have eaten them.
