Day 213: raspberry thief

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Here in the southeasternmost corner of the UK, we’re all still waiting for the summer that’s yet to arrive with anything like conviction. Today, we tumble into August, and if morning mists begin to greet us as we walk Nell over the fields, we shan’t be too surprised. I picked and ate my first blackberry of 2021 during the week and, though that event turned out – unsurprisingly – to be something of a triumph of hope over experience, the raspberries have begun to produce after a most promising fashion. I’d love to paint a picture of punnets full of juicy, fragrant berries being borne along the garden path to the kitchen, there to be rendered into compotes and sauces and puddings, but the truth is, we grow them in such a haphazard fashion, popping up all over the place as the fancy takes them, that their chief purpose is to provide a refreshing snack for the gardeners as they work. Can’t help feeling more gardens should be planted after this model – and I’ve yet to be in a garden that grew more raspberries than I could eat in one standing.
