Canadian fleabane, or horseweed (Erigeron canadensis), seems to be the poor relation to its Mexican counterpart, the pretty white and pink flowered Erigeron karvinskianus – both less attractive and less useful in a garden setting. But it’s not without its charms, which is just as well, as it seems to be popping up with increasing frequency. Here it’s decided that it will provide a striking foil to the verbena, and it doesn’t do a bad job – at a similar height of around 1.2m, its green and creamy tones aren’t displeasing against the purple. Quite whether I want the hundreds of daisy-like flowers going to seed all over the garden is something I’m not so sure about, so its stay may well be short and sweet. I’m reserving my judgement on this uninvited guest.
