Day 231: Hydrangea 'Zorro'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Zorro’ is not having a great year. Handsome foliage and deep, black stems to die for, everything was set for a grand display until the time came to bloom, at which point he decided to furnish himself with a single, solitary lacecap flower head, and quite a squished-looking one at that. Nose to petal, it’s as stunning as a Zorro bloom always is – vivid shades of violet and indigo, the large sterile florets surrounding the smaller, fertile flowers in the centre, anthers bursting forth now covered in blue pollen. A flower for a Smurf, if ever there was one. But really, this year, just the one. I’m blaming the late frosts.
