Day 233: the persistence of the field poppy

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Possibly lacking the glamour of their near relatives the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and the oriental poppy (Papaver orientale), the field poppy (P. rhoeas) could be considered the scrappier cousin but, as the flower of the battlefields, one with a noble heritage. Quite apart from which, it has greater staying power than its relatives – there are several clumps in this garden, each well into its second month of display. In spite of foliage and stems looking decidedly past their best, no one appears to have told the flowers, who continue to wave their petals about like tiny scarlet silk flags. The very picture and model of endurance.
