Day 237: Begonia rex 'Fireworks'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The leaves on the kitchen windowsill begonias are the headline grabbers. Of course, you grow Rex begonias for the leaves – large, heart-shaped, deeply wrinkled and bearing the most flamboyant markings. But as I stand here several times a day, I find myself gazing out through the foliage, my focus coming to rest on the hairy stems. Pubescent is the technical term, which goes for all aerial parts of the plant, but the stems are a thick, fleshy and a wonderful deep red that’s slightly lustrous, like those red strawberry laces you find at the sweetshop masquerading as a kind of liquorice. I won’t be chewing on the begonias any time soon.
