Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Yet one more casualty of a year when few things went according to plan and the garden was largely left to carry us, the later flowering Japanese lilies (Lilium speciosum var. rubrum ‘Uchida’) got sidelined, shaded out and, when finally the pot was moved into the light, chomped. But they still managed to produce a single, glorious bloom, and it would be hard to overstate how delighted I am that they made such an effort. Plenty of leaf to soak up what remains of this year’s sun – which I’ll augment with a seaweed-based plant tonic – to nourish the bulbs for next year’s display.
The garden, incidentally, is more than happy to step up and get on with things of its own accord when circumstances call for it to do so. It might not look quite how we had envisaged, but it will grow away quite contentedly, and always be there to nurture, to teach, and to listen, as needed. You might find yourself chatting to the bindweed, but that’s ok.
