Day 245: biscuits for autumn

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

One day into autumn –three weeks off by another reckoning – and shades of biscuit are beginning to creep into the borders. Close to the ground, the seed heads on the nigella have been at it for weeks, and I can’t say I’m sorry to see the sneezewort (Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’) following suit in a slightly more elevated position. It looked fabulous with petals of fresh white, and presents rather a handsome prospect now in shades of cookie dough, but the in between stage had that half-dunked teabag vibe that white camellias similarly fail to pull off after a late spring frost. Now just to work out how sneezewort got its common name – if it turns out it tickles the schnoz (can’t say as I’ve noticed), I could package the petals up with the heleniums (sneezeweed) and make my fortune selling snuff from a popup shop in Hoxton.
