Bright scarlet, tubular flowers are promised on the latest addition to the indoor jungle, and something floral certainly seems to be happening at the end of its long, trailing stems. This is the lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus radicans ‘Twister’), and truth be told, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it at first. Emma Aoife was smitten the moment she saw it, though, so home it came to occupy one of those rare stations in which it can enjoy ‘bright, but not direct, light’. It seems to be happy and, though experience has shown that the honeymoon period with a new houseplant can last for a good year, its thick stems and robust, slightly succulent, hairy leaves suggest it might even flourish in our care; which utterance being as good a way to curse a new plant as I can think of.
