Since it seems to be a year when persicaria wins the prize for the genus I blog about most often, I might aswell sneak another in before they all go to sleep for the winter. This one has all the vigour for which the bistorts are known, but you’re never going to mistake it for a dock (the most frequently cited reason for not admitting them into the garden). ‘Red Dragon’ reaches a height of about half a metre, though it can spread a bit if not kept in check. Though, as I always say, how slow do you have to be moving not to keep a plant in check? The flowers are little more than tiny white accents, all the glory is in the purple leaf and its deep maroon splodge, surrounded by the silver chevron. The red stems simply add to the splendour.
