The bluecrown passion flower (Passiflora caerulea) is undoubtedly mesmerizing, its blossoms resembling nothing so much as some kind of intricately constructed dessert, but not something I’ve yet given space to in my own garden. It’s a busy kind of plant, visually and in terms of the vigour with which it spreads, and I’ve yet to meet anyone who grows it who’s not at least slightly ambivalent about its presence, if not downright frustrated by it. The orange fruit (due to appear in the next few weeks) are technically edible, though it’s hard to believe anyone would choose to eat one if they had so much as an old sock to chew on as an alternative. I’m convinced that one of these days the perfect excuse to plant it will present itself, but until then, I’m mentally holding it in reserve.
