Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I’d not go quite so far as to say that I’m obsessed with this particular variety of heavenly bamboo, but I am rather partial. This is Nandina domestica ‘Obsessed’ – not a bamboo at all, but a relative of my favourite bloody bastard berberis (spiny old thing, gardeners approach with care). Thankfully, the nandina has no thorns, just fabulous foliage – a rich red flush to all the new growth which bleeds down the stems, a lovely mid green as the leaves mature. At it’s most colourful in spring and autumn (into winter), with sprays of small white flowers early in the year, it’s hard to think of a reason not to grow this compact evergreen shrub in even the smallest of gardens.
