Day 308: first frost

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

A light crust of frost on the seedheads of Phlomis russeliana

First frost this morning; not a heavy one, but sufficient to rasp the air with the sound of the neighbours scraping away at their car windscreens. There was the barest hint of a freeze a few nights ago, the suspicion of it upon the grass in the fields, but today brought ice-encrusted rosehips and holly leaves edged in silver. Fading quickly in the strengthening sun, it barely lasted for the duration of Nell’s walk, and won’t have so much as bothered a dahlia or troubled the pelargoniums I’ve yet to bring in. All of that to come, but not – I think – tonight.
