Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Loathe as I am to tidy too much away in the beds and borders at this time of year, there’s a certain amount that needs snipping off and carting away to the compost heap, if there’s even the remotest hope of my getting at the soil to plant bulbs and to mulch. So my winter clearing becomes a matter of logistics, rather than principle, and any tall stem still boasting a headful of seeds is, if not left standing (and I do try to leave as many in that condition as possible), propped up somewhere just as accessible to foraging birds. The shameful truth is, once I get down to it, I quite enjoy the process of restoring order – albeit of a particularly anthroprocentric kind – and have to stop myself from getting carried away. I don’t want to be booted out of the Raggedy Gardeners’ Club.
