Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Rarely, if ever, moved to dig a tulip up, I just shovel more in every autumn. Some of these have been in the ground for fifteen years, and are still going strong (some have been in the ground for the same length of time, and have disappeared). It’s a wonder there’s room for anything else so, when planting, I’ve begun to eschew any tool larger than the narrowest, pointiest trowel, for fear of disturbing what’s already there. Today, prepared for an increasingly forensic operation, in went the orange and vaguely orange tulips – Belle Époque, Brownie, Brown Sugar – and miraculously I only hit bulb once. Some kind of magic going on in those beds.
