Day 332: Salvia x involucrata 'Hadspen'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Whilst waffling enthusiastically on about the Sabra spike sage that I’ve not yet written a post on Salvia x involucrata ‘Hadspen’, to which I was comparing it. Still in flower at the end of November (though only barely after a visit from Storm Arwen), this is whopper of a salvia that shoots up from the ground to a height of 1.8 metres (six feet in old money), from which elevation it cheerfully brandishes long infloresences of deep pink flowers from summer through to the first frosts. Until this year, I’ve grown it only in relatively sheltered locations but can now testify to the fact that if you choose a more open and windy spot, you’ll want to stake this top-heavy character.
