Day 347: Alocasia x amazonica

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being given a second chance – confirmation of another’s belief in you in spite of your ability to get things horribly wrong. I think that’s what the alocasia is giving me, though quite why it’s chosen this time of year, when houseplants are supposed to be sitting back and taking things a little easy, is beyond me. But, years after the initial honeymoon period faded, and the impressive bat-winged specimen snaffled from a darkened corner of Ikea in Croydon had become a pair of crinkled brown stumps beneath a couple of floppy, forlornly waving leaves, it would appear to be entering into a period of concerted and active growth. The clue, as ever with the plants that increasingly crowd into my study around the west-facing window, seems to be bright but indirect light, a fair amount of water and good drainage. Best not stuff it up, this time.
