Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
For all the work there is yet to do outside, it really does feel as though in early December the garden decides to reward itself with a few weeks off. On the other side of the winter solstice, fragrant flowering shrubs will come into their own in the still, cold air – Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ might be making a half-hearted effort just now, but it’s not quite up to producing the sweet and heavy scent of the sarcococca that greets the new year. And while these are mustering their strength, the Oriental paperbush Edgeworthia chrysantha is constructing tightly packed clusters of yellow-white flowers at the tips of its biddable branches. February will have arrived before these can be persuaded to release their perfume, and any sign of foliage is even further off. For now, we watch and wait.
