Day 354: December rain

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

By all that’s good and right and holy, December in this part of the world should be cold and crisp and clear. In my experience, December rarely pays any notice to this doctrine, and churns out one mild, dull and wet day after another, though in the run up to these present holidays we’ve had some pleasingly chilly spells. Ever since the Christmas of 2013 I’ve been jumpy around rain in December, recalling the water that sat in the garden and spelled the end for our beautiful lavender hedge, which might have been able to put up with my neglectful pruning regime but was decidedly unimpressed at having its roots submerged in icy depths for a week over winter. It looks like 2021 is shaping up to end with mild drizzle, the year going out like a soggy dish cloth. How appropriate.
