Day 70: lungwort

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Pink, or blue. Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) can’t seem to make up its mind, and so for the first few days, flowers of both colours share the same stem and nobody notices the snowdrops going over, fat ovaries swelling and dropping to the soil to release their seed, because snowdrops are so last month and the year has moved on and spring is hovering tantalisingly on the threshold and the birds are INCREDIBLY loud and the daffodils are coming... And with their hairy, blotchy sobriety, the lungwort is the first to remind you that winter really is almost done and the colour is coming back, as they patiently ask again. Pink? Or blue?
