Day 72: wild primrose

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

There’s a lot of pizazz about the primula family. Multi-coloured polyanthus hybrids, gold-laced petals, pom-pom flowers and then, for the discerning, delicate show auriculas as well as their more rugged cousins for the border. I’m as much a sucker for the spectacle as anyone, but sometimes when you’re faced with a menu of 31 flavours of ice cream, all you really want is plain vanilla. And right now, nestling in the leaf litter on the coppice floor, the wild primrose (Primula vulgaris) will do me just fine.
