Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Every garden, every street, should have a magnolia of some form or another. The various hybrids of Magnolia x soulangeana are the most commonly planted, and perhaps the small-tree’s most Insta-famous incarnation ever-since social media developed a love affair for this flamboyant symbol of spring’s arrival. Large, furry buds opening to white goblets blushed with pink – you can go for a stellata variety for a smaller stature and a more spidery form to the blooms, but I do like the fat flowers that look like you could take a good drink from them. In bloom already, for a week or so then, cruelly in the March winds, so much confetti in the gutters.
