Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It’s time to start potting up dahlia tubers. Another of those calm, mindful tasks you can get lost in for a few hours – pop the radio on, brew a cup of tea, and sift through boxes of brown lumpy things you’ve not seen much of since you consigned them to the shed last year. I’m always struck by their wonderful plumpness, especially when compared to the sad, dehydrated excuses for dahlias that you get when you shell out fiver a piece for a new plant – they’ll be as fat as these in a year, if you treat them well and keep the slugs off. Lift out, check over for rot, cut out any manky bits, pot up, label, water...repeat. Wonderful.
