Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It’s almost ‘job done’ for this hellebore, Helleborus x sternii – a beautiful hybrid between the holly-leaved hellebore Helleborus argutifolius and the Majorcan hellebore Helleborus lividus. In its prime, it has the dark green, spine-edged leaves of the former, and the cream blushed pink and green flowers of the latter. Just now, all life and energy is being concentrated on swelling the ovaries in the centre of each pollinated bloom, seed pods ripening as the other parts of the plant mottle and fade. Still managing a dignified beauty, nonetheless, and it’ll bounce back for next winterspring.
