Day 120: apple blossom

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

April turns to May, and leaves a parting gift of apple blossom. The blooms of the cherry tree – a distant relative – might garner the greatest praise of the flowering fruit trees, but there’s something of a no-nonsense, forthright beauty of apple blossom that wins me over every time. Anyone with access to even the smallest area of outdoor space should have an apple tree, from a dwarf variety in a pot, to a horizontally-growing stepover barely over a foot high. Blossom in spring, fruit in autumn...and very little work to do in between.
