n. a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.

I hear the rain before I see it. Look up to see its glinting edge drawn across the width of the garden, gaining ground. Standing now, letting it claim me with the territory, too late to make a run for it to the greenhouse, too grateful to try. It’s a gentle fall but persistent, unlike the yesterday’s torrents when the sky finally broke. It’s been so dry.

The birds noisily go about their busy-ness, too occupied with family matters to bother with this rain. Their song has been incessant all morning and doesn’t falter for a second. Perhaps a stronger effort might bring the blackbirds down to wrestle worms from the soil, but this shower’s already moving on, leaving so-sweet air, greener greens and deep, brown earth eagerly sucking the precious drops. It’s not enough, but it will do for now.
