Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
It’s not necessary to be in possession of a furry face to appreciate a bearded iris, but it surely can’t hurt. And I’m not, I have to admit, totally sold on all of them – some can be a little blousy for my liking (said the man who loves paeonies) – but those of intermediate height, like Iris ‘Langport Wren’, seem to get the balance spot on at a height of 45-65cm with flowers about the size (if not the shape) of a tennis ball. Deep purple, almost black tipped buds open to dark purple standards and falls, with a big ginger beard – it’s a Viking, in the night.
