Day 163: Rose 'Gentle Hermione'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The rose ‘Gentle Hermione’ occupies a position on the spectrum somewhere just past ‘Gorgeous’, possibly even verging upon the territory of ‘Flouncy’. It’s the kind of pink, rosie confection of a flower that makes the ladies, and not a few of the gentlemen (including your present correspondent), go a little weak at the knees – at least, at its peak. Because if there’s one complaint I have about this rose, it’s that the flowers fade relatively quickly compared to other pink roses from the David Austin stable (mine’s planted right next to ‘Lochinvar’ and ‘Scepter’d Isle’, so direct comparisons are inevitable), and it’s not as reliable a repeat flowerer as it likes to think it is. Still... look at that face, and breathe in the scent of myrrh.
