Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
Suddenly, with the longest day behind us, my gardening mind is filled with lists of plants ‘going over’ and requiring ‘cutting back’. The flowers of Alchemilla mollis, at their peak just a week ago, are starting to go brown – I can countenance a bit of that. But flopping? It will collapse outwards, particularly after a wet end to spring when it’s put on a great spurt of growth. And then there are a few plants who should have been cut back weeks ago, and I can’t really ignore any longer – many of the hardy geraniums, and also the euphorbias. Snip snip. The compost heap will dine well tonight.
