Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year
I’ve decided to christen this particular planting style – one, it must be owned, in which I particularly excel – as the “melange”, a word which all proud Europeans among us will instantly recognise as the French mot juste for a mixture. Or a restauranteur’s term for “we didn’t really have enough of any one veg to go round all the covers so we’ve lobbed them all in together”. When applied to the garden, it provides instant rationale and the impression of strategy behind the appearance of cosmos in the raspberry patch, or even raspberries in the herb patch – in all honesty, I can’t quite remember what was actually meant to be where. Though of course, everything that is here is intended to be here. A melange, if you like. Yes, that’s the word.
