Day 245: Zinnia 'Queen Red Lime'

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The annual I have the most fun growing from seed – Zinnia elegans ‘Queen Red Lime’ – has a fascinating flower that’s different every day. Opening from the bud as a fairly simple dahlia shape and gradually transforming to an elaborate pompom with such a wealth of detail, I often find myself rooted to the spot gazing at them, and the little critters that make homes out of their tightly packed petals. The advice is to sow in situ as zinnias don’t like to be moved, but slugs and snails force me to raise them in modue trays and them transfer to slightly larger 9cm pots before planting them out some weeks later. They’ve been going all summer, and show no sign of letting up.
