Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

Some of the best advice for new gardeners I’ve ever read (it was in Alys Fowler’s The Thrifty Gardener) is to start your garden at the back door. That way, no matter how daunting the task of taming and beautifying the entirety of your outdoor space might seem, you can step out of the house straight into an area that energises and inspires you, and gradually – as time, resources and horticultural know-how permit – nibble into the wilderness until the whole garden begins to feel right (containers are perfect for this, as you can swap things about and bring plants to the fore as their key season of interest arrives). An approach which has the added advantage of providing something wonderful to gaze out of the kitchen window at while you’re doing the washing up.
