Day 262: Tiarella ‘Sugar and Spice’

Daily details from the garden to bring you inspiration throughout the year

The frothy pink and white flowers on this foamflower (Tiarella ‘Sugar and Spice’) are very much the icing on the cake for a plant which has it all – at least if you have areas of light shade, such as towards the base of a large shrub or tree. The foliage is really the stand-out feature – deeply lobed mid-green leaves each with a generous dark purple ink blot spreading out from the centre. It will cope with dry conditions but too much of this will send it into a dormant state – a good, moist, well-drained soil out of harsh sunlight which bleaches and burns the foliage. Think woodland floor, and you’ll get along fine.
